Project & Process
Hidden Worlds: Masking Gender In Science Fiction is a group student project completed in the Fall of 2013 by Pratt SILS students. The project began as an assignment studying and creating linked open data and morphed into the website you see now. Below is a summary of our process and the tools we used to get to the final product.

Data was gathered both by hand and via scraping programs written in python from these sources:

The data was then refined and turned into CSV files to be uploaded onto the website. Tools used:

  • Python
  • Google Refine
  • Excel

Visual Elements
The visualization on the home page of the site EXPLAIN PROCESS

Tools used:

  • Gephi
  • ?
  • ?

The data model was inspired and influenced by other LOD models, like Europeana. Tools used:

  • CMaps
  • Adobe Photoshop

The website itself was built in Drupal. For the initial stages of the project the site was run from Pantheon, but was later migrated to a paid hosting service. For the site we found these modules most helpful. Drupal is a steep learning curve and and may not be the most appropriate platform for working with triples.
